Sweet basil is an herb native to India and other tropical regions of Asia that has been used for centuries in cooking, medicine, and religious ceremonies. The leaves are bright green and have a sweet, slightly spicy aroma. When crushed or chopped, the leaves release their flavor more intensely and can be used fresh or dried to add flavor to dishes such as salads, sauces, soups, stews and pesto. Basil also contains several essential oils which have antiseptic properties and may help reduce inflammation.
