Hari Raya Puasa is right around the corner! With the restrictions relaxing, we can resume our home visits and Raya gatherings this year. Host your family and friends in style by jazzing up your spaces with a touch of nature! If expensive décor like art pieces and new furniture is out of your budget, consider sprucing up your homes with plants! Plants are a great way to transform and freshen up your spaces without breaking the bank (more money to spend on kuihs & keropok). Here are 5 plant styling tips to get your home RAYA READY this festive season!

1. Consider the theme of your home

The first step when re-decorating your home is to consider its current or intended theme. For example, rustic/farmhouse-themed homes often utilise harsh materials in their design. Plants like the Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata) are the perfect elements to add to these homes to soften the vintage woody look and adds a delicate touch to the room. On the other hand, if you have a more eclectic-styled home, consider complementing your cheery spaces with equally colourful potted flowers like Zinnia or Torenia!

2. Add statement pieces

A stunning statement piece can easily jazz up and elevate the look of your home.

Plants with huge, lush foliage like Monstera deliciosa is a great choice for that ‘WOW’ factor. They are also great to fill up the empty corners of your homes. Do not fret if you live in a smaller apartment and are not able to accommodate bigger plants! Statement pieces do not necessarily mean big and oversized. Consider plants like the Ctenanthe Tricolour that have bold and striking colours. They make unique and eye-catching tabletop centrepieces!

3. Pot in style

Do not overlook your choice of pots as they can contribute as much style to a room as the plants growing in them! While cement and ceramic planters are the most trendy way to show off your plants, we recommend good old terracotta pots that are long-lasting and go well with many interior designs. If you are looking for a more uniform look, choose pots of similar materials and colours for your spaces. On the other hand, you can simply embrace your favourite pots (even if they look vastly different) for a more eclectic finish!

4. Play with height

Other than styling your plants with different types of pots, try placing your plants at different heights in your space to create more visual interest. You can place your plants on a bookshelf coffee table, or elevate a hanging basket that will allow the plant to beautifully cascade from your ceiling. Plant stands are also a great way to create height differences. Alternatively, you can also use available furniture like step stools or chairs to create varying heights!

5. Grouping plants

Always follow the odd number rule when it comes to grouping your plants! Grouping your plants in even numbers makes the arrangement symmetrical and formal. Grouping them in odd numbers usually gives off a more casual look! You can also consider grouping plants that are of different widths, heights and shapes. Their differences will make the arrangement less structured and create a more interesting style!
